On the planet Eternia, Skeletor and his dark army overthrow the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull expecting to acquire her power. He-Man, his old friend Duncan "Man-at-Arms" and his daughter Teela are attacked by Skeletor's soldiers and they defeat them. They also rescue their prisoner, the inventor and locksmith Gwildor. He explains that he was lured by Evil-Lyn that used his invention the Cosmic Key to open the gates and seize the Castle Grayskull. He-Man and his friends retrieve the prototype of the Cosmic Key trying to release the Sorcereress but they are defeated by Skeletor and his army and Gwildor uses his key to open and portal for them to flee. They come to Earth but lose the key. Meanwhile, Julie Winston, who grieves the loss of her parents in a plane crash, and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan find and activate the key, believing it is a foreign musical instrument. On Eternia, Evil-Lyn locates the Cosmic Key and Skeletor sends her with a group of mercenaries and soldiers to vanquish He-Han and his friends and bring the key back. Will they succeed?
An enjoyable romp of a movie, aimed at kids of all ages and enjoyed by many. My memories of the film as a child are dim, unlike many of my contemporaries who fondly remember Masters of the Universe. So I revisited and whilst now the effects are ropey, the dialogue a little limited and the plot very 80s, the cosmic key doubling as a &quot;cool&quot; synthesiser, it does have a certain nieve charm.<br/><br/>Dolph is muscled up, baby oiled up and stoic. He doesn&#39;t seem to have a lot to say which may not be such a bad thing. Langella is a delight and very much the focus of the movie playing the rather camp Skeletor with great gusto. He delivers lines like &#39;on your knees proud warrior&#39; and &#39;yes you will, yes you will or I shall wreak terrible harm upon you&#39; (or words to that effect)with verve. As He-man points out, he doesnt want the woman (the sorceress/hag) he wants his he-man and its always been between them. And perhaps it always will? Make of that little nugget of information what you will. I know my interpretation added depth and perhaps hidden dimensions to the struggle for power between skeletor and his bulky nemesis.<br/><br/>The leprechaun, gwimmer, gwildor something gwimmy anyway, is interesting too, nice scene between him and the cow.<br/><br/>Cast your cynicism and modern sensibilities aside, rest your weary brain and any thought processes, and enjoy this tale through the eyes of a child. You may just surprise yourself.
I figured that I should check out this movie when it came on television. I&#39;ve heard all the terrible stories, so I had to see it for myself.<br/><br/>I really wonder why this film got a (at this time) 4.3 average. I think it would fit well in the 250 worst movies of all time chart.<br/><br/>If you liked the animated shows in the eighties, stay clear from this one. The plot is … well … boring. Grey Skull is captured by Skeletor (who looks awful by the way, they could have done him way better). He-man has to run to fight another day. Through a time and dimensional gate, he lands on earth … blah blah. The rest isn&#39;t even interesting enough to tell.<br/><br/>Just stay clear of this film (unless of course, you have to (like me) see for yourself if it&#39;s really that bad). I&#39;ll give it a 2 out of 10 for effort.
Little kids at play have come up with craftier plots, better characterization and conceivably more spectacular effects – provided their mothers let them play with matches.
Masters of the Universe is based on a popular cartoon called &quot;He-Man and The Masters of the Universe&quot;, the cartoon, itself is based on a toy franchise created by Mattel. Pig Boy was played by Richard Szyponder. Richard Szyponder was given a small part in the film. After winning a competition, where Richard got to visit the set and meet the cast and director. The executives at Mattel wanted director Gary Goddard to give Richard a part in the film and Richard was put in makeup and custome, as a servant of Skeletor, Pig Boy and is seen handing Skeletor his staff, when returning from Earth with the subdued He-Man. We see the bottomless pit beneath the throne room, which is filled with red water, which Skeletor fell into, in the climatic final battle with He-Man. Skeletor surfaces and says &quot;I&#39;ll be back!&quot; which ends in a freeze frame and fades to black. The extra scene was supposed to set the stage for the sequel &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot;, but since the film didn&#39;t do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot; had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film Cyborg. You are right, in the cartoon, He-Man never killed anyone, which was a &quot;No!&quot; for a cartoon aimed at children. But Masters of the Universe which was darker than the cartoon, which the film is based on, was an action movie and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops, which were written as robot warriors, were created for He-Man to smash, fight and kill and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops are the only people He-Man and his companions kill throughout the movie. It&#39;s assumed they were killed by Skeletor, when Skeletor used the cosmic key to enter the city and break into Castle Grayskull. Gwildor had a secret passage in his home, which led to caverns beneath Castle Grayskull. Frank Langella was offered the role of Skeletor and Frank Langella decided to take the role of Skeletor, because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn&#39;t refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role.
